AI coding pricing restructured itself twice in the last year: Cursor moved to credits, Windsurf replaced credits with daily quotas (and raised Pro from $15 to $20 in May 2026), and GitHub began shifting Copilot toward usage-based billing from June 2026. Here's where value sits now.

The honest hierarchy

GitHub Copilot Pro at $10/month is the best pure value: completions, chat, agent mode, code review, and the issues-to-PR Coding Agent, at half everyone else's price. Its free tier (2,000 completions monthly) is genuinely usable.

Cursor Pro at $20/month is the capability leader. Composer's multi-file agentic edits and parallel cloud agents are ahead of everything else; JetBrains support (added March 2026) removed the last big objection. Heavy users graduate to Pro+ ($60) or Ultra ($200).

Windsurf Pro at $20/month delivers roughly 80% of Cursor at the same price now — but its free tier, with unlimited tab completions, is the strongest among the AI-native editors. That free tier plus Copilot Free covers a surprising amount of real work at $0.

Claude Code is the different bet: a terminal agent bundled into Claude Pro ($20/month), scaling to Max tiers at $100-200 for autonomous heavy use. Senior developers increasingly pair it with a plain editor instead of an AI IDE.
